uffizi room 55 pittori fiamminghi XVII secolo

Among the most important works in this room are those of Baroque masters of Anvers: Pieter Paul Rubens and Antoine van Dyck. By the former there are the portrait of his wife and a self-portrait, characterised by a traditional arrangement and the established quality of the chromatic touch. Also by the same artist is the "Bacchus on a barrel", in which are fused figurative and iconographic motifs drawn from living models who the artist was certainly able to study. The theme of Bacchus-type revelry was beloved by the artists of his circle and, above all, by etchers who emphasised the moralistic implications.

Portraits by Van Dyck are also exhibited and include Charles V on Horseback and Margarita de Lorena; these are official portraits, characterised by conformity to the norms of this genre of portrait painting.
