The facade was built by Emilio de Fabris and the famous Dome by Filippo Brunelleschi. The Duomo of Florence is the third largest church in the world and was named after Santa Maria del Fiore in 1412. A masterpiece of architecture, the Dome was built by Filippo Brunelleschi between 1420 and 1434. A grandiose work, over 45 meters in diameter, which still represents one of the most daring projects in the history of art as the artist was the first ever to build a double-vaulted self-supporting structure with a herringbone brick covering. Inside the marvelous frescoes depicting the Last Judgment are by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari. Crypt: thanks to the excavations carried out in the second half of the 1900s under the current Cathedral, it is now possible to admire this crypt of the ancient basilica of Santa Reparata. This was a church with a three-nave plan, built around the year 405, a splendid example of early Christian culture in Florence. Inside it preserves an extraordinary floor mosaic with geometric decorations and a beautiful peacock. Baptistery: dedicated to San Giovanni, patron Saint of the city of Florence, this magnificent octagonal baptistery houses a beautiful mosaic decoration that covers the entire dome, depicting Christ and the Last Judgment, as well as stories of Genesis, Christ, Giuseppe and San Giovanni Battista. Bell tower: started by Giotto in 1334, this square-based bell tower is more than 80 meters high and with its white, red and green marbles represents strength and stability. Continued over the years by Andrea Pisano, it was enriched with sculptures and panels representing the Creation of man and his activities, the Planets, the Virtues, the Liberal Arts and the Sacraments. It was then finished by Francesco Talenti who gave the final touch of elegance and lightness to the structure, equipping it with large windows through which the light filters. Museo dell'Opera del Duomo: renovated in 2015, this magnificent museum space houses numerous masterpieces on 3 floors. Here we find the original panels of the Porta del Paradiso (Gate of Heaven) of the Baptistery created by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the sculptures from the ancient façade of the Cathedral made by Arnolfo di Cambio, the choirs of the Cathedral by Donatello and Luca della Robbia, and sculptures of moving beauty as the Penitent Magdalene, a wooden sculpture by Donatello, and a magnificent Pietà by Michelangelo.
