SCOPERTA DEL CADAVERE DI OLOFERNE
The painting is part of a diptych known as the "Stories of Judith". In two separate panels, once united in a frame, Botticelli has portrayed the "Discovery of the corpse of Holofernes" and "Return of Judith to Bethulia". The first painting is set in the tent of General Holofernes when his officers discovered his decapitated body. Holofernes is lying on the bed naked demonstrating extreme anatomical precision of the painter. The figures on the bed sides show very marked expressions from dismay to horror, from surprise to consternation.
