RITRATTO DI FRANCESCO DELLE OPERE
Francesco delle Opere was a wealthy craftsman of Florence of XV century. He is portrayed by Perugino three quarters turned to the left: it has a black cap and a cape of the same color and a red robe. Important detail is the piece of paper in his hand on which you can read the words "Timete Devm". This is the beginnig of a famous preaching of Savonarola that reveals a lot about the political, religious and historical context of the portrait. Following the example of Flemish painters, even Perugino portrayed Francesco delle Opere as if he was leaning against a railing which actually coincides with the edge of the picture.
