RITRATTO DI ELEONORA DI TOLEDO COL FIGLIO GIOVANNI

ritratto di eleonora di toledo col figlio giovanni

The painting depicts Eleonora of Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de' Medici, with one of her 11 children, almost certainly John, future cardinal. Probably Bronzino created the portrait during a summer family holiday at the Villa in Poggio a Caiano. In the background you can indeed see a distant fact under a leaden sky. Eleanor is portrayed sitting with son standing next to her. She is wearing an elaborate gown, embroidered in Spanish style, and many jewels. Bronzino eliminated from their faces every natural imperfection and enlightened them with a cold and decisive light that reflects perfectly the ideal of absolute power of the sixteenth.
