RITRATTO DI COSIMO IL VECCHIO
The work of art was realized in a time of crisis for the Medici family, it was in fact recently deceased Lorenzo Duke of Urbino, the last representative of the main branch of the family. Soon after came a new male heir of the "populate" branch of the Medici named Cosimo I. In the painting is portrayed Cosimo the Elder, the first prominent exponent of the Florentine family. Cosimo is portrayed seated three-quarter alongside a laurel plant, wearing a suit and a red wool cap. At his side you can notice a laurel broken branch on which it's rolled up a parchment that shows a passage of the Aeneid: "uno avulso non deficit", to argue that a broken branch does not weaken the other.
