PROVA DEL FUOCO DI MOSÈ

prova del fuoco di mosè

The scene represent the trial that the Pharaoh of Egypt chosen for baby Moses. The fact which the painter refers to is not written in the Bible but in some jewish texts of the middle ages. Moses had knocked the crown from Pharaoh's head and these, troubled and fearful that the child could one day steal his wealth and power, put him to the test. He put in front of Moses a plate full of gold coins and one full of burning embers: the child chose the embers burning his tongue, but reassuring the Pharaoh of his innocence. In the painting the Pharaoh is on the left on a raised throne looking his daughter holding the baby for the two plates held by some pages.
