MADONNA DEL POPOLO

madonna del popolo

The painting was purchased by Grand Duke Peter Leopold in 1786. The painting is characterized by bright colors, strong light, and the particular whirling composition. Mary and Jesus, along with some angels, are located at the top of the panel, while on the lower floor is represented the people. Between the two levels there isn't, however, a clear distinction. Mary points to a blessing Jesus the crowd below that enchanted and surprised looks at them in return. The role of the main protagonist of the painting is covered more by the people than by the divine characters.
