MADONNA COL BAMBINO E SANT'ANNA
The painting is also known as Saint Anne Metterza or "with Anne to act as a third" to highlight how the saint was in third place in order of importance after the Madonna and child. The three characters of the group are in the center of the panel: Sant'Anna holds between her legs Maria with the child in her arms in a protective and confidential gesture. The figures of the Madonna and Jesus have been attributed to Masaccio's hand. The strong chiaroscuro used to model the two figures makes them seem two carved reliefs as a very modern mold. Sant'Anna, on the contrary, is still bound to the medieval tradition. The figure, attributed to Masolino, it's in fact flat compared to the other two.
