CENA IN EMMAUS

cena in emmaus

In the painting is represented the biblical episode of the supper at Emmaus: when two disciples of Jesus resurrected don't recognize him and invite him to dinner. Pontormo immortalized Jesus in the act of blessing the bread, the time when his disciples finally recognized him. At the center of the scene included in an hypothetical triangle are Lucas, Cleofa and Jesus. This latter is place in the center and light up the whole scene. Above his head is a glowing circle with the triangle and the eye representing the Holy Trinity. At the side of the table are five monks of the '500.
