Santo Spirito
The church of Santo Spirito to Florence is one of the main basilicas of the city. It is situated in the quarter of the Oltrarno, the part south of the historical center, and with its simple facade it dominates the public square. It was constructed on the rests of the duecentesco destroyed agostiniano convent from a fire in 1471.
The Crocifisso di Michelangelo
Michelangelo was accommodated in the convent of Santo
Spirito in 1492 to 17 years, where, with the complicity of the priest,
she had the possibility to scorticare corpses coming from from the
hospital of the convent in order to study of the anatomy: just thanks to
this experience that Michelangelo became unsurpassable in representing
every the human body in its smaller detail.
As thanks of the hospitality the young artist carved the crocifisso
ligneo, than today it is disposed in the original positioning in room of
Santo Spirito after to be exposed for a century approximately in the
museum of Buonarroti House.
